Hi Ian

I thought you might be interested in featuring my latest film in the newsletter/website. It was filmed partially at St. Paul's Church in St. Paul's Square. It featured BBC Archers actor Ian Brooker, award winning Irish actor Michael Parle and Underwire Festival Best Actress Winner Isla Ure.

It was made for the London Sci-Fi society 48 hour filmmaking competition with a volunteer international cast and crew of 37. The team had French, German, Spanish, Romanian, Filipino and Irish members as well as locals.

I wrote, produced and directed with the "Spielberg of Hereford Neil Oseman acting as Director of Photography. Music was composed by Hans Hess with sound design by Matt Katz of Noisegate Media in Warwick.  Award winning local vegetarian caterers ChangeKitchen did the catering.

It was part crowdfunded via Indiegogo.

There is also a and a blog by Neil Oseman were I answered some questions about the process.

I'll share the stills photo folders with you. Stills were by Oliver Charles Woolley and Ian Jones.

Best

STEVEN KNIGHT is a Writer and Director.

In 1988, Steve and Mike Whitehill started a freelance writing partnership providing material for television and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? (co-created by Steve and produced by Celador) won awards around the globe including a BAFTA, National Television Awards, Indie Awards, Broadcast Awards, New York Festival, Silver Rose of Montreux and the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

Steve has had four novels published. The Movie House, Alphabet City, Out of the Blue and, in 2011, his first children’s novel, The Last Words of Will Wolfkin.

Steve’s first screenplay, Dirty Pretty Things, directed by Stephen Frears, premiered at the 2002 Venice Film Festival to outstanding reviews and was selected to open the prestigious London Film Festival. The film was released in the UK and the US to universal critical acclaim. It won a host of prestigious awards including four BIFAs, Best Film & Best Actor at the Evening Standard British Film Awards, the 2004 Humanitas Award, the Edgar Award for Best Motion Picture Screenplay, Best British Screenwriter at the London Film Critics’ Circle Awards and an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the 76th Annual Academy Awards.

His first stageplay, The President of an Empty Room, directed by Howard Davies, opened at the National Theatre, London in 2005.

2 more screenplays were released in 2007. Amazing Grace, directed by Michael Apted, about the life of the British anti-slavery politician William Wilberforce and Eastern Promises, directed by David Cronenberg and starring Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts, which centred on London’s Russian crime community.

Amongst many screenwriting projects in development both in the US and UK, Steve has just completed directing 2 films (both of which he also wrote):- his directorial debut, Hummingbird, stars Jason Statham and Agata Buzek about a damaged ex-special forces soldier living on the streets of London and Locke, starring Tom Hardy, about an ordinary working man whose life changes in the course of one evening. He is also an Executive Producer on Peaky Blinders (a 6-part series for the BBC), starring Cillian Murphy, which he created and wrote and is due to air in the Autumn 2013.

Bit more news about the new comedy set in the West Midlands written by Midlands writers and produced by a lad originally from our region. Shame it could not have been filmed here especially when they set up their studio in London they built it in derelict warehouse. I think we have loads of them in Birmingham and the Black Country!

What can you say? Written by midland writers, starring some midland actors, set in midlands - but filmed in a warehouse in East London?! Where's the sense?! Apr 30, 12:42pm

Just wanted to say thank you for a very positive Producers Forum and Film Birmingham partnership event.

I was very impressed by the soon-to-be opened BCU television studios, especially as before the meeting I was looking at the website for Studio 81 in Leeds and I was going to ask if we in Birmingham had something similar. http://www.leedsis.biz/

Looking at the measurements and facilities of studio 81 compared with the numbers quoted for BCU at the meeting, it seems BCU TV studios are much more impressive.

Do you think I should be impressed and very hopeful with the 65 million development at BCU?

I'd be interested to know what the mood of the Forum is about BCU's Educational subsidy being used to come out into the commercial market, and therefore competing unfairly on price. A friend of mine and his business partner have just invested in a broadcast-spec 4-waller, which they have privately funded. Apr 26, 11:32pm
Kevin Powis
Are there any links to what is available commercially at BCU? What facilities are they offering? Maybe things are different now but in the past whenever I have tried to hire facilities from the University I have found their prices well above the local norm - so if that's still the case I don't think competition will be an issue.
