First Monday was back with a bang for 2016. Carole Manship reports.
The monthly networking events took a holiday break and then shot back into life at The Mockingbird Theatre on Monday, 1 February. These evenings attract many people who have been on the film scene for a long time and many who are new to film and/or to the Birmingham film community. Some enjoy catching up with their old friends but I have never seen anyone turn down a request to take time to meet someone new. For instance, I was chatting with Louisa, a young writer who had decided to come for the first time. I asked established author and screenwriter Andy Conway to leave his table and meet Louisa as a fellow writer. They were still chatting the last time I looked.
One new person attending has written a book which she would like to see become an animated film and it was easy to make an introduction for her to an established animator. Two young filmmakers from Stratford upon Avon attended for the first time and were shy about mixing in with others. I think they were particularly grateful when I asked two new members of the Forum to come and meet with them. I was full of cold and left at 8 but the place had really started to buzz and I’m reliably informed by Pip that the evening went on beyond 10pm.
We welcome anyone who wants to mix with the film community to come along to our First Mondays.
It’s a free event with a cash bar.
Please don’t be shy. If you arrive knowing no one, please just ask for any of the people who regularly turn up: Brendan, Pip, Mark Pressdee, Andy Conway or me. We all want to make your effort to turn up really worthwhile.
Full details about upcoming First Monday events are on our Events page.
