Screen WM, the regional screen agency, is proud to announce their investment in feature film TOAST, through the agency’s Advantage Media Production Fund, supported by regional development agency Advantage West Midlands and the European Regional Development Fund, which begins shooting this week.
TOAST is the ultimate West Midlands nostalgia trip through everything edible in 1960s Wolverhampton. Based on the heart-wrenching bittersweet story of food writer Nigel Slater’s childhood, TOAST is a delicious retrieval of the tastes and smells that a young boy associates with his journey into adulthood.
This is a major coup for the region and forms part of a wider strategy by Screen WM to secure and create a more sustainable screen media sector in the West Midlands. This film reinforces Screen WM’s strategy to support and invest in genuine regional films.
The investment means that TOAST, produced by Ruby Films and commissioned by BBC One and BBC Drama, will also be filmed entirely in the West Midlands. A fantastic local story, the film will be shot in and around Birmingham and Wolverhampton, with key scenes being filmed at the famous Black Country Museum.
The film is also a welcome investment for the regional economy. TOAST will provide an estimated 35 jobs for local film crew – invaluable at this challenging economic time.
As with all Screen WM’s Advantage Media Production Fund investments, the production will spend at least twice our investment amount directly into the local economy through employing local crew and utilising local facilities such as locations, caterers, hotels and restaurants throughout the 4-week shoot.
The production will also be taking on four local trainees to gain valuable on-set experience as part of Screen WM’s Production Placement Scheme. The scheme launched in Autumn 2007 to assist people wanting to take the first steps into Film & TV Production, the scheme provides on-the-job work experience for those looking to get into the industry and focuses on providing skills for regional film producers of the future.
Members of the supporting cast has also been found locally, including Birmingham School of Acting alumnus Sarah Middleton, and Frasier Huckle who plays Nigel’s school friend Warrel.
This latest announcement positions the West Midlands as an important hub for UK film and TV production. The film brings an all-star cast to the region including Alice in Wonderland’s Helena Bonham Carter and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Freddie Highmore, cementing Birmingham and the region’s reputation as a centre of excellence for drama production following last year’s relocation of major BBC series Hustle and Survivors as well as Land Girls and Doctors produced at the University of Birmingham Drama Village..
Suzie Norton, CEO, Screen WM says: “We are delighted that Ruby Films has made Birmingham and the Black Country its home for the production of TOAST. The film will make excellent use of the region as the backdrop to a unique and touching story, and the benefit of the additional economic impact, whether through employing local crew or using local facilities and locations, cannot be underestimated.”
